August's Collector Knife will be in-stock, Saturday September 7, 10AM Pacific time! This blade is numbered 8/12 and includes a matching saya.
August's Collector knife design puts the focus on connection, transitions, and the reveal. The initial inspiration came from bearded Viking axes. My goal was to retain the styling of a bearded axe with the function of a traditional pizza slicer. The subtle hollow behind the blade invites you to rest your palm and push down as you slice the pizza.
With considerable canvas available on the handle and saya I sought to use stunning materials. I chose torrified flame maple and obsidian ebony from a local luthier shop. Torrification is a heat process that changes the structure of the wood, enhancing its durability and turning the typically pale maple a rich brown. Each transition between elements is marked by hammered copper, providing both physical and visual texture.
I wanted this piece to reveal a new detail from every angle as you heft it in your hand. When the ebony pin is pulled and the saya is removed, not only is the blade revealed, but also its connection to the copper in the form of 5 integral rivets. I feel the beautiful steel from Baker Forge & Tool brings the other three materials together in a magnificent way.
