September's design started with the case: A leather wrapped cylinder with Richlite caps pinned with copper on either end. The centre Richlite section marks the lid with a slight reveal of the copper infused forged carbon fibre band below. A quick twist of the lid and a satisfying click later, the custom bayonet mount that secures the lid is unlocked. Removing the lid reveals the copper clad handles of the carving set and the copper strike plate set into forged carbon fibre.
The carving set consists of a stainless steel damascus knife and fork. I acid etched the damascus deeply to produce a raised texture where the two steels meet. The acid etching process results in a subtle texture where it has eaten away at the steel. I buffed the steel to accentuate this texture.
Both the knife and fork have forged carbon fibre scales with copper pins mirroring the strike plate of the case. To retain the satisfying texture of the etched stainless steel, the fork has one scale with the backside free of obstruction - save for two copper rivets and a raised copper badge.
From early in the design I sought to make this piece tactile. Elements like the bayonet lock of the lid and the baseball stitched upholstery leather stretched around the case were cornerstones of the design. However, as often happens during my process I discovered new aspects of my materials through experimentation; this was the case with the deeply etched stainless damascus steel.
